Australian Utilities Trialling Underground Pillars
Two utilities have now trialled the underground distribution pillars (UDP) with one moving immediately to ongoing usage of the product. The UDP uses the diver’s bell technique for creating a dry location for the switchgear in an underground environment. The product is rated at 195A, a rating supported by temperature rise testing at the Testing & Certification Australia facility at Lane Cove.
Besides trafficable locations the diver’s bell design makes the UDP an attractive solution in flood prone areas.
A particular benefit of using the Weber UDP is that the trafficable rating of either class B or C (AS3996) ensures that the pit and its lid are in good condition at the end of the construction phase of any nearby buildings. Construction vehicles are able to drive over the UDP with no consequential damage.
No longer do electricity consumers need to tolerate pillars that encroach on driveway aprons and become hazards when opening doors.
